The boss of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is being mocked after launching a lengthy tirade against a rival chatbot firm over its Super Bowl commercials.

Anthropic is using the ads to criticize the commercialization of ChatGPT, calling the move a "betrayal."

In a 420-word post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hit back, calling Anthropic "dishonest" and "deceptive"—and even accusing the firm of "double standards."

But social media commenters have turned the accusation back on Altman, with some comparing his post to "a toddler throwing a tantrum."

"Looks like someone took it personally," one person said, while another called his post "hypocritical."

One prominent comment read, "The reason Anthropic's satirical ads are going viral is precisely because you and OpenAI have already lost people's trust over the past few months."
Altman also objected to Anthropic's decision to run the videos during the Super Bowl on February 8.

"I guess it's fitting for Anthropic's double standards that they would use a deceptive ad to criticize hypothetical deceptive ads that don't actually exist, but I didn't expect it in a Super Bowl ad," he wrote.

He defended the ads, saying they were necessary because OpenAI is committed to providing "free access" and "agency" to ChatGPT users.

"Anthropic sells an expensive product to rich people," he said, arguing that his company wants to "bring AI to the billions of people who can't afford a subscription."

But X's head of product, Nikita Bier, offered Altman some simple advice for the future. He said, "Never respond to a funny joke with an essay."

Super Bowl Controversy
Anthropic offers a free version of its Claude AI, but more powerful versions require users to pay – similar to ChatGPT.
 Software Services
The firm's ads feature a variety of scenarios designed to poke fun at how the introduction of advertising might negatively impact how people use chatbots.

In one ad, a man is talking to a therapist about how to better communicate with his mother – the kind of question a user might ask ChatGPT. The therapist initially offers some common-sense advice before abruptly pivoting to what appears to be a dating service for older women.

It then ends with the slogan: "Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude."

Despite the humorous approach, the fact that Anthropic is running ads during the Super Bowl – the most expensive and high-profile marketing opportunity in the US – demonstrates that it doesn't take its rivalry with OpenAI lightly.

Experts say a 30-second commercial during one of the world's most-watched sporting events can cost up to $10 million (£7.4 million).

However, this pales in comparison to the hundreds of billions of dollars that AI companies are investing in this technology.
