Eric Dane, actor of the hit shows Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy, has died at the age of 53. Less than a year ago, he publicly revealed that he had motor neuron disease.

Dane died on Thursday afternoon, his representative said in a statement. He first revealed in April that he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a type of motor neuron disease.

The statement read, "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world." “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same battle. He will be deeply missed and always fondly remembered. Eric loved his fans very much and will always be grateful for the love and support he received. The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.”

ALS is the most common form of motor neuron disease, which means the terms are often used interchangeably. It is a terminal degenerative disorder that causes people to lose the use of their arms and legs and the ability to speak, swallow, and eventually breathe freely.

There is no cure; people with motor neuron disease, on average, die 27 months after diagnosis, but some patients can live for decades – like Stephen Hawking, who was diagnosed with a slowly progressive form of the disease at age 21 and lived to be 76.

Dane played Dr. Mark Sloan, or "McSteamy," on Grey's Anatomy. He initially signed on for just one episode, then became a series regular for six seasons. He recently appeared on the HBO drama Euphoria as Cal Jacobs, the father of Jacob Elordi's character.

Dane will appear in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, which he shot in a wheelchair due to his health.

After announcing his illness in April, he told People, "I feel fortunate to be able to continue working and look forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week." "I ask that you please give my family and me privacy at this time."

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson paid tribute to Dan on Thursday, telling Variety: "I am heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric. It was an honor to work with him. Being his friend was a gift. Eric's family is in our prayers. May his memory always be a blessing."

Dan was born in San Francisco in 1972. When he was seven, his father died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He once told an interviewer, "I never realized how intelligent and aware I was at that time until I had my own children... [It] must have been very bad at seven years old."

He left high school a month before graduation to take acting classes in Los Angeles, and made his onscreen debut in an episode of Saved by the Bell in 1991. Further roles included appearances on The Wonder Years, Married... with Children, Charmed, Roseanne, and the medical drama Gideon's Crossing, before being cast in Grey's Anatomy, appearing in 145 episodes between 2006 and 2021.

Dane later appeared in films such as X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. He also starred in and produced five seasons of The Last Ship, a post-apocalyptic drama in which he played the captain of a US Navy warship searching for a cure to a global pandemic. Dan took a break from the show in 2017 to address his depression.

In January, Dan was scheduled to receive an award from the ALS Network for raising awareness about the disorder, but he left the show at the last minute due to "not feeling well" and instead appeared in a pre-recorded message.

ALS is also known in North America as Lou Gehrig's disease, named after the Yankees baseball player who was diagnosed with the condition in 1939.
