Oil prices in Asia witnessed fluctuations on Monday morning. This occurred after US President Donald Trump threatened Iran, warning that if it did not permit ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, he would destroy Iran's critical infrastructure.
In a scathing social media post on Sunday, Trump stated that if this vital waterway was not reopened by late Tuesday night (US time), the United States would launch attacks on power plants and bridges.
The price of Brent crude had surged above $110 (£83.38) per barrel; however, these gains were slightly pared back following reports of negotiations regarding a potential ceasefire between the US and Iran.
The movement of oil and gas shipments from the Middle East has been severely disrupted. This is because, in retaliation for airstrikes conducted by the US and Israel since February 28, Tehran has issued a threat that any vessel attempting to utilize this strait will be targeted.
Citing US, Israeli, and regional sources, reports indicate that Iran—along with a group of regional mediators—is currently negotiating the terms of a potential 45-day ceasefire. Such a ceasefire could potentially bring a permanent end to the ongoing conflict between the two sides.
By the time of the midday break in Asia, the price of Brent crude had risen by 0.7% to $109.80 per barrel, while the price of US-traded oil remained relatively stable, holding steady at $111.62 per barrel.
Sushant Gupta of the consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie stated that oil prices would remain volatile, fluctuating in response to every new development regarding the escalation or de-escalation of the conflict.
He added that all eyes are now fixed on whether the movement of energy shipments from the Gulf region will be able to resume. If this happens, it will help alleviate the energy supply shortages currently affecting countries around the world.

Disruptions to ship traffic in this narrow waterway have caused global energy prices to surge. Typically, one-fifth of the world's total energy shipments pass through this channel. Furthermore, the rise in energy prices has heightened concerns regarding escalating inflation worldwide.
Last week, oil prices climbed above $100 per barrel. This occurred as Trump intensified his threats against Iran. He warned that if the U.S. were to launch airstrikes in the coming weeks, Iran would be sent back to the "Stone Ages."
On Sunday, Tehran claimed responsibility for a series of attacks targeting petrochemical plants situated in Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
On Monday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that if attacks on its country's civilian infrastructure continued, it would escalate its own attacks against U.S. economic interests. On Sunday, OPEC a group comprising major oil-producing members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), such as Saudi Arabia and Russia—agreed to a modest increase in crude oil production for the month of May.
However, this production increase of 206,000 barrels per day is likely to remain largely on paper, as several key members of the group are currently unable to boost production due to ongoing conflicts.
Trump has repeatedly postponed the deadlines for lifting his threats against vessels utilizing this strait; nevertheless, he reiterated his demands in a strongly worded post on "Truth Social."
The paragraph below contains very harsh language. Trump wrote on Sunday: "Tuesday will be 'Power Plant Day' and 'Bridge Day' in Iran—all in a single day! Nothing like this has ever happened before!!! Open up this damn strait, you crazy bastards, or else you will go to hell—just watch! Praise be to Allah. President Donald J. Trump."
Trump stated that there is a "very good possibility" that a deal will be reached on Monday, but he also added that if an agreement is not reached soon, he is considering "blowing everything up and seizing the oil."
A senior Iranian military official, General Ali Abdollahi Alibadi, dismissed Trump's previous deadline as "helpless, panicked, unhinged, and foolish," while also warning that "the gates of hell will open" for the American leader.
