Adelaide radio personality Leon Byner, who was the voice of South Australians for decades, has died at the age of 77 after battling acute leukemia.

Byner, who retired from broadcasting three years ago, spent nearly 60 years in radio.

Byner's career began after moving to Adelaide from Melbourne in the 1960s, and he was best known for his long tenure at 5AA, where he hosted the morning show for 23 years.

"As soon as he sat down behind the microphone, bang, he was gone because that was his place," said his former colleague Jeremy Cortex.
Tributes to the veteran broadcaster have poured in, including from the Prime Minister.
"It was a pleasure to be a regular guest on his show for many years and an honour to consider him a friend," said Anthony Albanese.
