The White House is asking Congress to increase the US defense budget to $1.5 trillion (£1.1 trillion). This would represent a massive increase—the largest expansion in military spending since World War II.
This includes funding for the Trump administration's proposed 'Golden Dome' missile defense system, as well as an increase in the domestic production of naval vessels, including new 'Trump-class' warships.
The administration stated that, alongside this proposed increase, it would also seek cuts to domestic agencies—including the elimination of certain programs related to climate, housing, and education.
This request—which requires approval from the US Congress—is distinct from the $200 billion sum the Pentagon has requested for the war in Iran.
A summary of the budget, released online, explains that these cuts would be achieved by "reducing or eliminating wasteful, politically weaponized, and unnecessary programs, and by returning local responsibilities to the relevant governments."

US President Donald Trump has long expressed his desire to increase the defense budget and boost domestic defense manufacturing.
Earlier this week, during a private event at the White House—which was captured on camera—Trump stated that military spending should be a national priority going forward.
"It is not possible for us to take care of day-care, Medicaid, Medicare, and all these different things; they can do that at the state level," the President said. He added that the focus should instead be on "military security."
The proposed budget includes a 10% cut—or approximately $73 billion—in non-defense spending.
Trump's proposed budget represents a 42% increase compared to the previous fiscal year, which totaled $445 billion.
Of the total amount, approximately $1.1 trillion would be allocated as discretionary spending for the Pentagon—a record high. Another $350 billion—specifically for the industrial defense base—will come through a process known as "budget reconciliation." This is a procedural shortcut that allows certain legislation to pass in the Senate with a simple majority of just 51 votes.
The budget also requests funding of $65.8 billion for troop pay raises and shipbuilding—funding that includes the next-generation vessels President Trump has dubbed the "Golden Fleet."

These include the heavily armed "Trump-class" warships unveiled in December. Announcing the warships during a press conference, Trump stated that construction of the first vessel in the series—the USS Defiant—would begin shortly, and that the initial ships would become operational within two and a half years.
Administration officials have repeatedly warned that the United States currently lags behind China in both shipbuilding capacity and overall production output.
Furthermore, the budget includes some funding—the exact amount of which remains unclear—for a $185 billion "Golden Dome" system. Officials have explained that this initiative will comprise a network of sensors and interceptors deployed across land, sea, and space, designed to protect the United States against next-generation missiles and drones.
However, the Congressional Budget Office has estimated the potential cost of the space-based components alone at $542 billion over a 20-year period.
Experts warn that the total cost of this initiative could ultimately consume a significant portion of the United States' massive defense budget.
