iPhone Boom: Apple Sees ‘Extraordinary’ Demand as Tim Cook Exits

Demand for Apple's iPhone has reached new heights, and the surge in its sales in China has outpaced that of all other regions.

In financial results released on Thursday, the company reported that, overall, sales of Apple products rose by 17% to $111bn (£81bn) during the first three months of the year—an increase compared to the same quarter last year. Sales in China grew by 28% year-on-year.

Apple's outgoing CEO, Tim Cook, stated that recent demand for the iPhone has been "extraordinary," making the iPhone 17 "[Apple's] most popular launch in history."

Despite the continued success of the iPhone, sales of Apple's other products—including Mac computers and wearable devices such as the Apple Watch—have remained relatively unchanged.

However, during a call with financial analysts to discuss the company's performance, Cook noted that demand for the new MacBook Neo is "extremely high." He added that this quarter saw a record number of new Mac buyers—a feat he attributed to the Neo, which is sold at a significantly lower price point than other Mac laptop computers.

In addition to its existing product lineup, Cook announced that Apple Intelligence—the company's artificial intelligence (AI) offering—will be updated later this year and integrated into the company's Siri voice assistant.

"This AI is not a standalone feature; rather, it is an essential and seamless part of our devices," Cook said. He further emphasized that Apple's approach to AI is centered on "respecting user privacy"—a philosophy which, according to him, clearly establishes Apple's platforms as "the best places to experience AI."

The manner in which Apple has introduced its AI features has set it apart from the broader technology industry. Instead of spending billions of dollars in the race to build its own AI model, the company has decided to partner with firms like OpenAI and Google to leverage their AI technology to enhance certain Apple features.

Although some have criticized Apple as a "late mover" in this wave of AI technology, the potential downside risk for the company remains relatively low should the lofty expectations surrounding AI fail to materialize. As Cook prepares to transition from the role of Chief Executive to Chairman, he took a moment to commend John Ternus—a long-time Apple hardware executive who is set to become Apple's next boss on September 1st.

"I know he will inspire us to push the boundaries of our imagination, enabling us to create exceptional products for our users," Cook stated.

Ternus spoke briefly with financial analysts over the phone for the first time. He indicated that he plans to uphold Cook's tradition of financial "discipline" and also offered hints regarding future product releases.

"We have a fantastic roadmap ahead of us," Ternus remarked. "Suffice it to say, this is the most exciting period of my career at Apple in terms of the products and services we are currently building."

Reddit Expands Its Reach
Reddit also released its quarterly earnings results on Thursday.

The platform hosts online forums and discussion groups covering a wide array of topics. The company reported that its revenue reached $663 million this quarter—a 69% increase.

During a call with financial analysts, Reddit CEO Ladd Huffman revealed that 200 million people in the United States—representing more than half of the country's total population—visit Reddit every week. However, their goal is to have an equal number of people in the U.S. visit the site every day. Reddit also aims to attract one billion daily visitors globally.

Reddit has also emerged as a crucial source of training data for AI companies. These companies "scrape"—or gather—data from various web pages across the internet to use for training AI chatbots and tools.

Huffman noted that Reddit's current agreements with OpenAI and Google are highly lucrative. Under these deals, Reddit grants permission to use the conversations taking place on its site to train AI models, receiving financial compensation from these companies in return. However, he also suggested that platforms like Reddit—where people engage in discussions on a wide array of topics—will become even more vital in the future, particularly as the rest of the internet becomes "optimized for AI."

"Ultimately," Huffman remarked, "there can be no artificial intelligence without actual intelligence."

Roblox Hit by Age Verification Measures
Roblox, an online gaming platform immensely popular among young people, saw its shares plummet 20% in after-hours trading following the release of its quarterly earnings report. The company reported significant growth in both its user base and revenue over the past three months.

However, in a letter addressed to investors, CEO David Baszucki explained that following the implementation of stricter age verification protocols on the platform, the growth in user numbers did not meet expectations.
