Naomi Osaka is known for her stunning Grand Slam looks – but she took it to a new level on day three of the Australian Open, making headlines with a jellyfish-inspired outfit.

The four-time Grand Slam champion made a spectacular entrance onto Rod Laver Arena before her first-round match against Antonia Ružić, wearing a dress dedicated to her daughter, Shai.

"That's the most spectacular and eye-catching entrance I've ever seen in a first round of a Grand Slam," said tennis correspondent Russell Fuller on the 5 Live Australian Open Daily podcast.

The Japanese 16th seed, a two-time Australian Open champion, secured her place in the second round by defeating Croatia's Ružić 6-3 3-6 6-4 in a deciding set.

Osaka walked onto the court wearing a blue tie-dye tracksuit jacket and white wide-leg bottoms – both featuring ruffles.

The 28-year-old explained that her outfit was actually inspired by a jellyfish she saw while reading a book to her two-year-old daughter.

"Nike let me design it. I'm so grateful that I get to do things that I like. It's really beautiful," she said.

Osaka's idea was brought to life by London-based stylist Robert Wun, who has previously styled global music artists Beyoncé, Cardi B, and Ariana Grande.

The striking look also featured two white butterflies – one on her wide-brimmed hat and one on her umbrella – a nod to the incident during her 2021 Australian Open title run when a butterfly landed on her face during a match. When the insect landed on her left leg during the third game of the match, she stopped play, gently removed it, and placed it on the side of the court – only for it to fly back and land on her nose. Osaka made a strong start to her campaign against Croatian world number 65 Petra Martic, who was celebrating her 23rd birthday.

The former world number one didn't make things easy for herself, but managed to avoid a potential upset despite trailing 3-4 in the deciding set. She immediately broke back to level the score at 4-4 and then won the next two games to secure the victory. Former world number six Chanda Rubin commented, "It felt like even if she had lost, she would have carried that dress well." "But it felt like if she didn't win, the statement wouldn't have been complete.

"Ultimately, her tennis did the talking."

Osaka will face Sorana Cirstea in the second round at Melbourne Park. The unseeded Romanian needed three sets to advance in her first-round match, defeating Germany's Eva Lys 3-6 6-4 6-3.
