The government has reversed its manifesto promise to protect all workers from unfair dismissal from their first day on the job.
Following concerns from business groups, ministers now plan to introduce this right six months later.
The government argued that it was taking this step to prevent delays to its employment law in the House of Lords, where it has faced opposition.
Other new day-one rights, such as sick pay and paternity leave, will still remain in place, coming into effect in April 2026.
Currently, employees must have worked in a role for at least two years to be protected from unfair dismissal.
Labour had planned to eliminate this qualifying period altogether, with a new legal probation period to be determined after consultation.
This promise was a key commitment in Labour's manifesto before last year's general election.
