Moore on redistricting fight: Maryland 'will not sit idly by'

Maryland Governor Wes Moore (Democrat) said on Sunday that his state "will not sit idly by" amid the nationwide redistricting struggle.

Last week, Moore formed a Redistricting Advisory Commission to redraw Maryland's congressional maps.

“If other states are going to go through this process … we’re not just going to sit on our hands because Donald Trump tells us to,” Moore told CBS’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation.” “That’s not the way this process is going to work.

Moore, reiterating his press release issued on Tuesday, said on Sunday that the commission will speak with Marylanders across the state in an effort to draw "fair maps." Maryland's delegation currently consists of seven Democrats and one Republican.

Moore's move comes as California voters, with over 64 percent support, passed Proposition 50, which gives the state legislature authority over the Golden State's congressional maps until the state's independent commission takes back control in 2030.

California Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) supported the proposal after Republicans in the Texas Legislature redrew the Lone Star State's congressional maps in August with President Trump's support.

Republicans in Missouri and North Carolina have followed Texas' lead, while in Ohio, Republicans and Democrats have reached agreement on a map that could give the Republican Party an edge in two districts next November.

“If other states are going to have this process and go through this journey of identifying whether or not they have fair maps in a mid-decade cycle, then so should Maryland,” Moore added.
