Canada issues urgent travel advisory for Australia

According to a Nov. 23 travel advisory update, the Government of Canada is urging Canadians to stay informed and review the latest travel advice for Australia.

After making landfall on the Cobourg Peninsula and Melville Island, Tropical Cyclone Fina is expected to make landfall again on the Kimberley coast, near King George River, on Nov. 24, 2025,” reads the statement.

Travellers are being warned that the storm could cause flash flooding and landslides. If that happens, it could disrupt essential services such as transportation, power distribution, water and food supply, and telecommunications networks. It could also make it difficult to access emergency services and medical care.

According to weather radar information from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Cyclone Fina travelled from the Timor Sea and has been categorized as a category three tropical cyclone with sustained winds near the centre of 150 km/h and wind gusts of up to 205 km/h.

The storm is “slow-moving,” and it’s expected to weaken throughout the day as it moves further inland. Several warnings are currently in place for the affected areas.

Canadians who are already in the affected area should be careful, monitor local news and weather reports, and follow the instructions of local authorities.

The Government of Canada regularly updates travel information and advice to help Canadians “make informed decisions and travel safely while [they] are outside Canada.”
