The family of a woman shot by a federal agent revealed some new details on January 14 about what she was doing in the hours before the fatal shooting, which sparked protests across the country.

Renee Nicole McLean Good was shot by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross on January 7. The shooting occurred during an ICE operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when the 37-year-old mother of three drove her SUV toward Ross after being asked to exit her vehicle.

Footage of the fatal encounter has been widely viewed and has deeply divided the nation. Department of Homeland Security officials say Ross acted correctly and Good was engaging in "domestic terrorism"; top Democrats have called for Ross's arrest. New polling has found that a majority of American voters believe the shooting was wrong.

In statements calling Good "the beautiful light of our family," the woman's four siblings, parents, and their attorneys described the shooting as the result of a chance encounter after dropping off their 6-year-old child at school.

"We want to thank everyone who has supported Renee and our family. Nae was the beautiful light of our family and brought joy to everyone she met. She was constantly hopeful and optimistic, which was infectious. We all miss her more than words can express."

According to the family and their attorneys, Good and his wife, Becca Good, were walking their dog in their car after dropping off their child when they encountered federal agents in their neighborhood conducting an immigration operation. The family's attorneys said the couple had stopped "to observe with the intent to support and help their neighbors."

Becca Good had exited the SUV shortly before the fatal encounter. In Good's last words, captured on camera, the woman can be heard telling immigration agents, "I'm not angry at you."
"She was our best friend with an infinite capacity for love." Good's family said, "Nae-Nae gave everything to care for her friends and family, and indeed, even those she had never met." "She was our protector, our support in grief, and our wonderful source of joy."

This new information comes after the family announced that a Chicago law firm is launching an investigation into Good's death. This investigation comes at a time when Justice Department officials say there is "no basis" for an investigation. The firm, Romanucci & Blandin, is the same firm that represented George Floyd's family after his death in 2020 by a police officer in Minneapolis.

Department of Homeland Security leaders say the controversial deployment of military-like agents to the state is necessary to root out fraud that agency officials have linked to Somali immigrants.
