The Met Office has issued several yellow severe weather warnings for rain throughout the day.

Further heavy rain is expected for the rest of the week, potentially increasing total rainfall levels in many areas and causing some disruption.

Temperatures remain fairly mild in most places, but will turn colder from the north from Thursday and across all areas into next week.

On Tuesday, an area of rain will linger across central and southern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Some of this rain will be heavy and a Met Office yellow warning is in force for southwest Scotland – valid until 23:59 GMT – and for much of Northern Ireland – valid until 21:00 GMT.

Rainfall totals of 20-40mm (0.8-1.5in) are possible in some places, with up to 60mm (2.4in) in others.

The warning states that travel disruption is likely this evening due to surface water and flooding on roads.

Another band of heavy and potentially thundery rain will spread from the west across Wales and southwest England on Tuesday afternoon.

Additional Met Office yellow warnings have been issued for this for south Wales, valid until 23:59 GMT.

How to stay safe during storms and what to do in a power cut

Another warning for rain and wind is in force for Cornwall and Devon, valid until 18:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Due to recent rainfall and saturated ground, this could lead to flooding in some areas.

The heavy rain will be accompanied by strong south-westerly winds, making conditions even more difficult.

Further rain is expected across southern England and Wales on Wednesday.

Due to increasing rainfall totals in south Wales, an additional Met Office yellow rain warning has been issued for Wednesday from 06:00 to 23:59 GMT. There could be further heavy rain at times over the weekend, which may lead to more weather warnings being issued, but you can find details of those here.

It's getting colder

Temperatures have been well above average so far this November.

While temperatures will remain up to 6C above average in southern England and Wales this weekend, it will be turning colder in Scotland.

Cold Arctic air will gradually arrive on Thursday, bringing maximum temperatures down to around 6C – and below average. And as the cold air clashes with a rain-bearing weather system on Thursday, there is a chance of snow falling over higher ground in Scotland this November.

However, this is not unusual.

By Friday and Saturday, the cold air will have reached Northern Ireland and northern England, and temperatures will be in single figures.

By late Sunday and into next week, the Arctic air will have covered the whole of the UK.

Therefore, on Monday, maximum temperatures will only be between 4C in the north and 9C in the south.

There is also a chance of overnight frosts early next week.
