Police 'disappointed' with arrest of 31 people during league function
Police expressed disappointment after 31 arrests and over 200 infringements were made during the final weekend of the Pacific Rugby League Championship.
The Kiwis defeated Toa Samoa 36-14 at CommBank Stadium in Sydney on Sunday.
Following the match, fans flooded the streets of Auckland, sending extra staff to Otahuhu, Mangere, Otara, and Clendon.
Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Shannon Gray said hundreds of fans descended on the ground, causing traffic jams on the roads and surrounding areas.
"Police would like to thank the majority who celebrated peacefully and lawfully," he said.
"However, it’s disappointing to see that there were a number of individuals choosing to behave poorly, putting themselves and other members of the public at risk."
Gray said police observed "a variety of illegal behavior," including people riding on the roofs of vehicles, children dancing in busy traffic lanes, and vehicles performing burnouts.
Thirty-one people were arrested and 225 infringement notices were issued for violating the alcohol ban, as well as other driving and road-related offenses.
Six vehicles were impounded and 15 people were summoned to court for driving under the influence.
"We recognise the right for people to gather and celebrate in our communities," Gray said.
"However, this should not be at the expense of other people’s safety or enjoyment."
