Temperatures are set to drop and a yellow health alert for cold weather is in place across Yorkshire & The Humber until Friday as a barrage of cold Arctic air heads for the British isles.

It comes in the wake of Storm Claudia over the weekend of November 14-16, which caused the River Don in Sheffield to burst its banks but largely left properties intact, while delivering a month’s worth of rain to some parts of England.

Now, Sheffield can expect bitterly cold nights ahead with temperatures dropping to 0C throughout the week - and a chance of snow sweeping in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Sheffield can expect highs of up to 7C on most days in the coming week, but will notice a significant temperature drop from the unseasonably mild past few weeks.

A bright and clear Monday with highs of 7C will give way to patchy rain on Tuesday, with lows of 2C overnight on both days.

Then, in the early hours of Wednesday, the Met Office is predicting a blast of cold Arctic wind driving temperatures as low as 0C, and a sweeping band of precipitation across the country

Biting temperatures will continue with Thursday, Friday and the weekend all expected to see temperatures as low a 0C overnight.

England's yellow cold health alerts, issued by the UK Health Security Agency, warn of the potential for "significant impacts" across health and social care services. They are in place from 8am on Monday to 8am on Friday.

The RAC also warns of increased breakdowns on roads due to slippery roads from freezing temperatures and fallen leaves.
