US President Donald Trump has said he is withdrawing National Guard troops from several American cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles, after a Supreme Court ruling last week weakened his authority to use troops for policing.

"When crime starts to surge again, we will probably be back in a much different and stronger form," Trump wrote on Truth Social on New Year's Eve.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Trump administration dropped its legal efforts to maintain control over troops deployed in LA. Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump could not use troops in Chicago for domestic law enforcement.

Trump's statement also mentioned Portland, Oregon, but not Washington, D.C., where troops are still on patrol.

Trump's decision to order the deployment of National Guard troops to Democratic-governed cities sparked several legal challenges to his authority. These troops are typically under the control of state governors.

Hundreds of troops had been sent to Chicago and Portland, but they had not yet been deployed to patrol city streets due to ongoing legal challenges.

Trump has argued that the troops are needed to enforce the law and crack down on crime and illegal immigration. Critics deny the necessity of the troops and accuse Trump of attempting "authoritarian" actions that threaten democracy.

Last week, in the case of Trump v. Illinois, the Supreme Court ruled that the president did not have the authority to send troops to Chicago.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Trump administration withdrew a legal motion in California seeking to keep the troops under Trump's control.

California Governor Gavin Newsom praised the move, posting on X: "It's good that Trump and his shadowy cabinet members are finally admitting that this illegal intimidation tactic is over." He said Trump's announcement to withdraw troops from American cities was "a political way of saying, 'You can't fire me, I'm quitting.'"

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, praising last week's Supreme Court decision, told MS Now, "There's at least one other branch of government that recognizes that the president overstepping his bounds is a real threat to our democracy."
