$980M Mega Millions Winning Ticket Sold in Georgia
A Mega Millions player from Georgia won a $980 million jackpot on Friday, beating extremely difficult odds.
The numbers chosen, along with the Golden Mega Ball 7, were 1, 8, 11, 12, and 57.
The winner matched all six numbers, surpassing Mega Millions' astronomical odds of 1 in 290.5 million. The next drawing will be held on Tuesday.
The winner can choose an annuity or cash option—a lump sum payment of $452.2 million before taxes. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the prize is shared.
Four jackpots were won in Mega Millions earlier this year, but Friday's draw was the 40th since the last win on June 27, a game record, officials said.
In September, two Powerball players from Missouri and Texas won a jackpot of nearly $1.8 billion, one of the largest jackpots in the United States. The current Mega Millions jackpot is not among the top 10 lottery jackpots in the US, but it would be the eighth-largest jackpot for Mega Millions since the game began in 2002.
Other Prizes
Mega Millions also offers smaller prizes in addition to the jackpot. The odds of winning any of these are 1 in 23.
There were more than 800,000 winners of non-jackpot prizes in the November 11th drawing.
Tickets cost $5 each and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Half of the proceeds from each Mega Millions ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold. Local lottery agencies administer the game in each jurisdiction, and how the profits are spent is determined by law.
