A Dungannon man has been charged with attempted murder
A 43-year-old man has been remanded in custody for the attempted murder of a woman in Dungannon.
Martin Joseph Grogan, of Gortin Crescent in the town, was charged after the woman was found injured at a house on Altmore Drive on Saturday.
Mr. Grogan appeared at Enniskillen Magistrates' Court on Monday morning, where his lawyer stated that the defendant pleaded not guilty and claimed the woman's injuries were caused by intruders.
A detective constable told the court that when the ambulance service arrived at the scene, the woman was bleeding profusely from stab wounds to both legs.
'Just turned around'
The police officer said they later spoke to the injured woman at the hospital, and she said she had told the defendant to leave the house.
She said he "just turned around" and "hit her," and that she refused to call an ambulance and threatened to attack her again.
The detective said the defendant was not there when emergency crews arrived at Altamore Drive, but subsequent inquiries led them to an address in Armagh where he was found hiding on the roof.
He told police he was sleeping on the sofa when "three black males" kicked in the door and attacked the injured party.
The detective said Mr. Grogan refused to provide any further information about these men, and when shown photographs of the front door, which was undamaged, he said it must have been unlocked.
A defense lawyer said there was no application for bail for Mr. Grogan, who is also charged with knowingly possessing an offensive weapon.
He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in court again on Wednesday.
