Bentley Revives a Legend: 12 New 1929 Speed Sixes

CREWE, ENGLAND — Bentley has done the unthinkable: it has built a brand-new car from 1929—again. Nearly a century after the original Speed Six thundered to victory at Le Mans, the British marque has resurrected one of its most revered machines in the form of the Speed Six Continuation Series.

Timing, as history shows, is not Bentley’s strongest suit. The original Speed Six debuted just ahead of the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression. Its modern revival arrives amid global inflation, economic uncertainty, and tightening luxury markets. Yet none of that stopped Bentley from selling all 12 examples—each priced at around £1.5 million plus tax—before production was even complete.

Bentley insists this is no replica. Instead, it calls the project a “resumption of production,” continuing a lineage that began almost 100 years ago. To achieve this, engineers dismantled and digitally scanned an original, multi-million-pound Speed Six, recreating components with extraordinary accuracy using techniques long lost to modern manufacturing.

Built by Bentley’s bespoke Mulliner division, each car takes roughly eight months to complete. Hundreds of specialist-made components are assembled by hand in Crewe, including more than 600 newly fabricated parts for the engine alone. The result is a machine that is historically faithful down to the smallest detail—right down to the dashboard dials inspired by the Speed Six that won the 1930 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Under the bonnet sits a 6.5-litre, aircraft-derived straight-six engine producing a dyno-verified 205 horsepower. On paper, the figures may seem modest for a car costing seven figures, especially one weighing around 1.5 tonnes. But performance numbers miss the point. With minimal driver aids, period-correct brakes, and visceral handling, the Speed Six delivers an experience modern cars simply cannot replicate.

Crucially, this is not a museum piece. Bentley designed the Speed Six Continuation to be raced. Owners can compete in historic motorsport without the guilt of risking an irreplaceable original—making it both a drivable time capsule and a functional race car.

For the dozen buyers lucky enough to secure one, the Speed Six is more than a vehicle. It is a rolling heirloom, a celebration of Bentley’s golden era, and a reminder that authenticity, craftsmanship, and heritage racing still command enormous value.
