Blue Jays’ Surprising Move on Yariel Rodriguez
The Toronto Blue Jays have made a surprising roster decision, designating right-hander Yariel Rodriguez for assignment.
Francis Romero shared this information on social media:
According to sources, the Blue Jays have selected right-handed pitcher Yariel Rodriguez for assignment.
He posted 1.4 WAR with 73.0 innings, 66 strikeouts, and a 3.08 ERA out of the bullpen in 2025.
Sportsnet further clarified that he has already been outrighted, meaning he has already cleared waivers.
About Rodriguez
Rodriguez, a 28-year-old Cuban native, was a hot commodity on the free agent market when he came to the United States before the 2024 season. Billed as a starting pitcher, he went just 1-8 with a 4.47 ERA in 21 starts in 2024.
The Blue Jays could also try to trade him if a team is interested in him; However, Toronto may have to pay a significant portion of his salary.
Could the Jays trade him?
As mentioned above, they certainly could, and likely will sometime during the offseason. Given his background as a starter and his success as a reliever, he could be a favorite for many teams.
What does this mean for Toronto?
Well, the Jays didn't need a 40-man roster spot, so it's unclear why they did this now. Perhaps Toronto is preparing for a big spend at the Winter Meetings, which begin Sunday night. They have been linked to players like Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Pete Fairbanks, and Edwin Diaz, though they also have some new competition for Bichette.
They have already signed Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to multi-year deals. By doing this, Toronto has likely forced José Berríos to move to the bullpen. Perhaps this move means Rodriguez was no longer needed, or there was no longer room for him. We'll reveal more about the Jays' plans for the Winter Meetings in the Blue Jays Roundtable throughout the week.
