Canada's G-7 summit will work for peace in Ukraine and the Middle East
G7 foreign ministers meet in Canada to discuss Arctic security, the war in Ukraine, and efforts to secure peace in the Middle East.
Amid the current era of "geopolitical instability", Anand said his US counterpart Marco Rubio has been "a very constructive member" of the G7 and praised the US for its efforts to ensure peace in the Middle East.
John Kirton, founder of the G7 Research Group at the University of Toronto, said it's likely the foreign ministers will accomplish more at the Niagara-on-the-Lake meeting than at the G7 heads of state meeting in Kananaskis in June.
“The fact that President Trump won’t be there will definitely help,” he said. “They won’t have to watch every facial expression or be careful of any rants he might unleash.”
Kirton noted that there has never been a meeting of G-7 foreign ministers with so many new ministers; Anand was appointed Canadian foreign minister in May, and Marco Rubio was appointed US secretary of state in February. Kirton noted that the longest-serving foreign minister is Antonio Tajani of Italy, who has held the post since October 2022.
