F1 makes it official: Hamilton can swap number 44 come 2026
Previously, drivers could not change their racing numbers as they were deemed permanent ahead of the 2014 season.
This means drivers like Lewis Hamilton can switch their iconic number 44 to a completely different number.
Hamilton has used the number 44 since the beginning of his career, initially adopting it because it was on the license plate of the first go-kart he inherited from his father.
This number has accompanied him throughout his Formula 1 career as well as his philanthropic work. Hamilton founded the Mission 44 charity in 2021, which aims to help young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds make their way into motorsport.
Since its inception, Mission 44 has donated £8 million to youth education and funded 42 partners.
The seven-time world champion launched the 'Mission 44' fund.
