Updated Dec 1, 2025: Severe floods across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia have killed over 1,150 people as rescue efforts continue and travel gradually improves.
The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in three Southeast Asian countries has risen to more than 600, officials said on Sunday, while relief efforts continued for thousands displaced over the weekend.
Massive devastation was wreaked across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand after a rare tropical storm in the Strait of Malacca brought heavy rain and strong winds for a week. Indonesia reported 435 deaths, Thailand 170, and Thailand three.
Rescue and relief officials in Southeast Asian countries were still trying to reach many flood-hit areas on Sunday, even as floodwaters receded and thousands of people were evacuated across the three countries. According to official data, more than 4 million people have been affected – nearly 3 million in southern Thailand and 1.1 million in western Indonesia.
Across the Bay of Bengal, a cyclone struck the island nation of Sri Lanka, killing 153 more people, officials said. 191 people are missing and more than 500,000 people have been affected nationwide.

Official data uploaded to the government website showed the death toll in Indonesia rose to 435 on Sunday, up from 303 on Saturday. Authorities collected reports of deaths and damage from the western island of Sumatra, where landslides and flooding following heavy rains devastated three provinces.
Road closures cut off many areas, while damage to telecommunications infrastructure disrupted communications. Relief and rescue teams used helicopters to deliver aid to people in areas inaccessible by road.
