ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have said that hundreds of people with prior convictions for violent crimes, including homicide and sexual assault, were taken into custody under an expanded enforcement effort known as Operation Metro Surge. According to officials, many had longstanding final orders of removal but remained in the U.S. prior to the operation.
Among the names listed by some outlets were individuals with previous convictions for homicide and other serious offenses, including Abdirashid Elmi, identified in social reports as a Somali national with a homicide conviction. Federal officials say such arrests are intended to remove dangerous offenders from communities with limited local cooperation.
