The Miss Universe organizer has told Sky News that despite allegations of aggressive behavior toward a contestant, he cannot back down from his stance.
In a viral video, Nawat Itsagrasil is seen reprimanding Miss Mexico for not posting promotional material about this year's host country, Thailand, online.
Journalists present at the event claimed that Nawat called Fatima Bosch "stupid"—a claim she strongly denied.
Following the verbal altercation, she responded: "You are not respecting me as a woman."
Nawat then called security, and Bosch left the room. The other contestants, including the reigning Miss Universe, stood in solidarity with her.
The pageant's president, Mexican businessman Raul Rocha, described her behavior as "public aggression" and "serious misconduct."
At a press conference, Nawat insisted he had used the word "harm" instead of "stupidity" and urged journalists to check online footage of the incident.
However, he added: "This issue has brought me to this point. I understand that and apologize."
Under further pressure from reporters, Nawat began crying and said: "I'm human and I can feel hurt."
He also apologized to the contestants, saying: "If anyone was hurt or felt uncomfortable, I'm very sorry. It's over. Okay? Are you happy?"
The controversy has also impacted the Miss Universe pageant, as several competitions remain until the Grand Final on November 21st.
