Appearing brighter and larger than a normal full moon, the third supermoon of the year was also observed by some in the UK with an atmospheric phenomenon called a halo.
This halo even has its own folklore – 'Ring around the moon, rain real soon.'

It was a great opportunity for sky watchers and weather watchers around the world to capture some spectacular images.
Supermoons occur because the moon's orbit around Earth is not perfectly round, but slightly elliptical – meaning it is sometimes closer to us than others.

When the moon is at "perigee" – or near its closest point to Earth – and this coincides with a full moon, fully illuminated by sunlight, we call it a supermoon.
The moon appears larger and brighter in the night sky.

Clear skies mean the moon will be a great view, but sometimes you might also see a ring around the moon.
This is called a 22-degree halo, and it occurs when there is a very high layer of ice clouds in the sky.

The light from the moon passes through the ice crystals, where it bends and reflects, creating a ring effect.

The presence of ice clouds in the sky can be a sign of an approaching weather system, and hence the folklore suggesting 'rain very soon'.
High ice clouds covered southern England early Friday morning, where the halo was seen.
Yes, rain will spread across much of the UK on Friday, accompanied by strong winds.
