WASHINGTON (AP) — Just one day after a stunning U.S. military operation led to the capture of Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro, President Donald Trump reignited global controversy Sunday by renewing his call for an American takeover of Greenland — while issuing stark warnings to Cuba.
The rapid escalation underscores what the administration openly describes as a renewed push for American preeminence in the Western Hemisphere, a doctrine Trump has embraced with unapologetic force during his second term.

“Who’s Next?” the World Asks
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump argued Greenland is now essential to U.S. national security, claiming Russian and Chinese vessels are operating throughout the Arctic region.
“Greenland is so strategic right now,” Trump said. “We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it.”
When asked whether the Venezuela operation signals what could come next for Greenland, Trump offered a cryptic response:
“They are going to have to view it themselves.”
Those words sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles already reeling from the overnight U.S. raid in Caracas.
Denmark Pushes Back Hard
Denmark, which governs Greenland, reacted with outrage. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a blunt rebuke, declaring Trump has “no right to annex” the mineral-rich Arctic island.
She emphasized Denmark already grants the U.S. extensive military access to Greenland under NATO agreements and warned Washington to stop threatening a longtime ally.
“Greenland and its people are not for sale,” Frederiksen said.
Tensions worsened after a viral social media post from Katie Miller — a former Trump official — displayed Greenland draped in U.S. flag colors with the caption: “SOON.”
Denmark’s ambassador to Washington responded swiftly, demanding full respect for Danish sovereignty.
Trump Revives Old Doctrines
In last month’s National Security Strategy, Trump explicitly cited the Monroe Doctrine and the Roosevelt Corollary, signaling a return to interventionist policies that once defined U.S. dominance across the Americas.
Trump even joked that the doctrine is now being called the “Don-roe Doctrine.”
The administration recently reignited the Greenland debate by appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy — a volunteer role Landry says will help “make Greenland a part of the U.S.”
Cuba in the Crosshairs
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a chilling warning to Cuba during an appearance on Meet the Press. He claimed Cuban intelligence forces were directly responsible for guarding Maduro and controlling Venezuela’s internal security apparatus.
“Maduro wasn’t protected by Venezuelans — he was protected by Cubans,” Rubio said.
Trump added that many Cuban guards were killed during the operation. Cuban state media later confirmed 32 officers had died, escalating fears of broader regional conflict.
With Venezuela’s subsidized oil supply cut off, Trump predicted Cuba’s struggling economy would collapse further.
“It’s going down for the count,” he said.
Fear Spreads Across the Region
Cuba swiftly organized rallies condemning U.S. “aggression,” warning that every nation in the region could be next.
Ordinary citizens echoed that fear.
“It can happen anywhere,” said Bárbara Rodríguez, a laboratory worker in Havana. “We have always been in the crosshairs.”
A New Era of U.S. Power
Rubio made the administration’s stance unmistakably clear:
“This is the Western Hemisphere. This is where we live — and we’re not going to allow it to become a base of operations for U.S. adversaries.”
With Maduro gone, Greenland back in the spotlight, and Cuba under renewed pressure, one question now dominates global diplomacy:
