First Lady Melania Trump chaired a United Nations Security Council meeting on children and education in conflict in New York on Monday, as the US continues its military action in Iran.

Her remarks focused on the role of children's education in "promoting tolerance and world peace."

This is the first time a world leader's spouse has chaired a meeting, which Trump has done on behalf of the US since he assumed the rotating presidency of the UN council this month.

The First Lady also expressed her condolences to the families of the US service members killed, though she did not explicitly mention any specific military action.

She said, "Their bravery and dedication will always be remembered."
"I offer my heartfelt prayers for a speedy and easy recovery for all those injured. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Trump, who is an advocate for children in his official role, also said: "The US stands with all children around the world. I hope you will find peace soon." Plans for him to chair the meeting were announced late last month.

UN Under-Secretary General Rosemary DiCarlo said during the meeting that "when conflict erupts, children are the most affected."

She added, "The last two days have reminded us of this truth."

He added, "Schools in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman have closed and moved to remote learning due to ongoing military operations in the region."

He also mentioned reports from Iran of a strike on an elementary school.

Iranian officials say a strike struck an elementary school in the city of Minab on Saturday, killing 153 people. Iran has blamed the US and Israel for the attack.

Before Monday's meeting began, Iran's ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, said, "It is deeply shameful and hypocritical that on the very first day of its Security Council presidency, the United States convened a high-level meeting on the protection of children." The US military's Central Command said it was looking into reports of the incident, while the Israeli military said it was "unaware" of any IDF operation in the area.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that "the United States would never intentionally target a school."
