WASHINGTON – Melania Trump is capping off her first year as First Lady with the worldwide release of a documentary chronicling the 20 days leading up to her husband Donald Trump's return to the White House.

"Melania" will premiere Thursday at the Kennedy Center, where Trump is expected to walk the red carpet before the film's release in theaters worldwide on Friday. She also held a similar screening at the White House last Saturday.

The First Lady said the idea for the documentary came to her after her husband won the 2024 election and that it will offer viewers a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into her life.

"My new film, 'Melania,' offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment for America, the inauguration of the 47th president," she said Wednesday before ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. "For the first time in history, people will see the 20 days leading up to the inauguration through the eyes of an incoming First Lady."

A private person by nature, Melania Trump remains something of an enigma to the public even in her husband's second term.

She said the film will show what it takes to step into this high-profile role while balancing being a businesswoman, wife, and mother, and the responsibility of bringing her family back to the Executive Mansion.

"Everyone wants to know. So here it is," she says in the trailer for the nearly two-hour film.

In another scene from the trailer, it's Inauguration Day and Melania Trump is inside the Capitol, waiting to be escorted to the Rotunda for the ceremony. She turns her head, looks directly into the camera that was recording her every move, and says, "Let's do this again."

She wrote in her memoir, published in 2024, about how much she values her privacy. She is not seen or heard from as often as some of her predecessors, which may be influencing public perception of her. But they also like to work independently.

The American public is divided in its opinion of the First Lady, but a large number—about 4 out of 10 adults—had no opinion or had never heard of her. About 3 out of 10 adults viewed her favorably, while roughly the same number had an unfavorable opinion of her.
