According to investigators, a Toronto police officer fired his gun while investigating a car theft in Mississauga on Wednesday night, leaving one suspect in custody and another still at large.
The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. in a parking garage near Tomken Road and Dundas Street, where Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers were actively investigating an alleged car theft that occurred two days earlier.
TPS stated that officers encountered two suspects in the area. During the exchange, one officer fired his gun. Police have not confirmed whether anyone was shot.
One suspect was arrested at the scene, while the other suspect fled and remains at large. Police say efforts are ongoing to locate the individual. No officers were injured during the incident.
Peel Regional Police confirmed they were called to assist TPS officers with scene management, but stated they were not directly involved in the incident.
Ontario's civilian police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has exercised its mandate.
The province's police watchdog stated that it is unknown whether the fleeing male suspect was shot. The SIU investigates police-involved incidents where a person has been seriously injured, killed, or a firearm has been fired.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate the case.
