The White House said on Saturday that it would be "beautiful" for Washington's NFL team to name its new stadium after President Trump. According to an ESPN report, a mediator has told the Commanders' ownership group that the team wants the stadium named after him.

Mr. Trump is expected to deliver this message in person at Sunday's game between the Commanders and the Detroit Lions at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. American veterans will be honored at halftime.

The Republican president's press secretary, Carolyn Leavitt, said, "It would certainly be a beautiful name, as President Trump made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible."

A spokesperson for the Washington Commanders told The Associated Press in a text message that the team had no comment on the report. The office of the city's mayor, Democrat Muriel Bowser, declined to comment.

Under an agreement announced in April between the team and the District of Columbia, the team will return to the nation's capital in a new stadium costing approximately $4 billion. The stadium will be built on the site of RFK Stadium, where the team played for more than three decades and won three Super Bowls in the 1980s and 1990s. The team moved to Landover in 1997.

President Joe Biden signed a bill late last year that will transfer the land, including the old stadium, from the federal government to the city. Although the stadium is located on federal land, Congress in January allowed the city to retain control of the property for 99 years.

Under the agreement, the team will contribute $2.7 billion, and the city will invest approximately $1.1 billion for the stadium, housing, greenspace, and a sports complex along the Anacostia River. The agreement was approved by the D.C. City Council in September, and demolition has now begun.

In July, Mr. Trump threatened to block the deal by insisting that the team's name be changed from the Commanders to the Redskins, a term considered offensive to Native Americans. Despite this threat, the city council and the team managed to reach a framework agreement a few days later.

"Washington "Whoever It Is" should immediately change its name to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a lot of demand for it," Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post on July 20.

"Owners, get it done!!!" the president added.

The team changed its name to the Commanders in 2020 under then-owner Dan Snyder, who sold the team in 2023 to a group led by Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris.

Mr. Trump has long enjoyed seeing his name on things related to his real estate developer career, from high-rise buildings, hotels, and golf courses to his branding deals, which include Trump-published Bibles, watches, and cologne.
