Tomorrowland, Europe's hugely popular electronic dance music (EDM) festival, will hold its first full Asian edition in Thailand this December.

Tomorrowland said on Tuesday that Thailand was chosen for its "growing influence on the global stage of music, innovation and experience-driven tourism."

Belgian brothers Manu and Michiel Beers started Tomorrowland 20 years ago, and it has become one of the world's most iconic celebrations of EDM. Its annual Belgian edition often features spectacular, creative stages and massive parties that attract music lovers from around the globe.

Organizers expect more than 50,000 people each day at the event, which will be held in the Thai beach city of Pattaya from December 11 to 13.

Pre-registration for tickets will begin on January 8. A "Full Madness Pass" for all three days of the festival will cost 12,500 baht ($400; £300), while a single-day pass will cost 5,100 baht.

Organizers said more details about the festival's theme and lineup will be released soon.

While the Tomorrowland group has held events in some Asian cities, this marks the first time it will host a full-scale festival on the continent, and it will be on the same scale as its Belgian edition.

Thai media reported that Thailand has signed a five-year agreement to host the event with Tomorrowland and expects to generate 21 billion baht ($673 million; £497 million) in revenue during that period.

"Expanding Tomorrowland to a new continent is a milestone we approach with great respect and excitement... This is the beginning of a long story," said Tomorrowland Chief Executive Officer Bruno Vanwelsenaers.

In recent years, Thailand has become a strong contender in the live music scene. Last year, it hosted international music festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival and Creamfields. Bangkok was also a stop on K-pop band Blackpink's world tour last October.

And the country's own music and arts festival, Wonderfruit Festival, is emerging as a hot destination on the festival circuit, attracting thousands of people every year.
