Donald Trump is reportedly angry with J.D. Vance and has given him a new, rather regal nickname. According to several insiders, the former president is unhappy with Vance's early preparations for a potential 2028 presidential campaign. Trump has famously suggested he might run for a third term, while J.D. Vance is positioning himself as one of his potential successors.
Reports indicate that Trump is displeased with Vance's presidential ambitions.
Multiple sources told entertainment reporter Rob Shuter on his Naughty But Nice Substack that Donald Trump is allegedly referring to J.D. Vance as "Prince William."
In most cases, being compared to a member of the UK royal family, the next in line to the throne after King Charles, would be considered a compliment. A 2025 YouGov poll shows Prince William, the Prince of Wales, with a 62% popularity rating and a 99% recognition rating. However, insiders say the "Prince William" nickname for the vice president is "not a compliment."
One insider says "J.D. needs to be very careful" as he builds his campaign team for 2028, while Trump has only just completed one year of his second term. "If Donald even suspects he's being overshadowed, he'll attack," the source said. "Trump doesn't tolerate successors — real or imagined."
Trump is said to be sensitive to anyone trying to steal his spotlight, and that includes J.D. Vance. "Donald knows exactly what happens when challengers start to emerge," one source warned. "He's seen this movie before — and he always strikes first."
Another insider agreed, stating that Trump's team is "watching the vice president's every move" and that "in Trump's world, ambition equals betrayal." As one source put it, "JD might think he's planning a campaign. But Trump thinks he's meeting a rival for the throne."
On January 5, JD Vance reacted to an alleged attempted break-in at his home in Ohio, in which the suspect was taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department.
