President Donald Trump has called the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretto by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis "very unfortunate"—but his comments have sparked controversy and intensified scrutiny of the federal law enforcement action.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday at the Urbandale Machine Shed restaurant, Trump acknowledged the tragic incident but also criticized aspects of the encounter when asked if he thought the shooting was justified. “Everyone in this room, we consider this a very unfortunate incident, okay?” he said. He added: “I didn’t like that he had a gun. I didn’t like that he had two fully loaded magazines.”
Pretto, an American citizen and registered nurse who treated veterans, was killed earlier this month during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Federal authorities initially claimed he was armed and posed a threat, saying he intended to "kill law enforcement."

However, videos from bystanders and witness accounts have challenged key elements of the official narrative. According to several news analyses, footage circulating online shows Pretto holding a cell phone as he approached the agents and does not show him brandishing a weapon or firing shots.

The incident has fueled a broader political and public debate over the use of force by federal agents, immigration policy, and the rights of legal gun owners. Trump said he wanted a "very respectful and honest investigation" into Pretto's shooting, although critics argue that federal leadership has been defensive rather than transparent.

The shooting has also led to protests in Minneapolis and calls for a thorough review of law enforcement practices. Some Republican lawmakers, civil liberties advocates, and gun rights groups have criticized the government's statements and called for an independent investigation.

As the story unfolds, Pretty's death remains a significant issue in national discussions about federal law enforcement and accountability.
