Trump Unveils the 'Golden Fleet': U.S. Navy to Build Massive

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump has unveiled a sweeping and controversial proposal to dramatically expand U.S. naval power, announcing what he calls the “Golden Fleet” — a plan to construct a new generation of massive “Trump-Class” battleships designed to project American strength across the world’s oceans.

Speaking to supporters and defense industry leaders, Trump said the initiative would mark a return to “unquestioned American naval dominance,” combining large-scale shipbuilding with advanced weapons systems and next-generation defenses.

What Is the Golden Fleet?

According to Trump, the Golden Fleet would consist of at least five Trump-Class capital ships, described as heavily armed surface warships larger than current destroyers and cruisers, and inspired by the era when U.S. battleships symbolized global power.

“These ships will be big, they’ll be beautiful, and they’ll be the strongest the world has ever seen,” Trump said. “No one will challenge America at sea.”

While the U.S. Navy currently relies on aircraft carriers, submarines, and guided-missile destroyers, the proposal suggests reviving the concept of dominant surface warships — updated with modern missile systems, radar, cyber defenses, and hypersonic capabilities.

Boost to Shipbuilding and Jobs

Trump framed the plan as both a national security move and an economic strategy. He said construction would take place in American shipyards, creating tens of thousands of skilled manufacturing and engineering jobs.

“This isn’t just about defense,” he said. “It’s about rebuilding American industry and ending reliance on foreign supply chains.”

Defense analysts note that U.S. shipbuilding capacity has lagged behind China’s in recent years, making domestic production a key strategic concern.

Support and Skepticism

Supporters argue the Golden Fleet would send a powerful message to rivals such as China, Russia, and Iran, reinforcing U.S. naval dominance at a time of rising global tensions.

Critics, however, question both the cost and the strategic logic. Battleships were phased out decades ago in favor of more flexible and survivable platforms, and experts warn that large surface vessels could be vulnerable in modern missile-heavy warfare.

“There’s a reason the Navy moved away from battleships,” said one defense analyst. “The question is whether nostalgia can coexist with modern combat realities.”

What Happens Next

No formal Pentagon approval or congressional funding has yet been secured. Any such program would require years of design work, billions of dollars in appropriations, and intense debate on Capitol Hill.

Still, the announcement has already reignited conversations about the future of U.S. naval strategy, military spending, and America’s role on the global stage.

Whether the Golden Fleet becomes reality or remains a bold political vision, one thing is clear: Trump’s proposal has once again put American military power and shipbuilding at the center of the national debate.
