NASA Dismisses Kim Kardashian’s Moon Landing Claims
US space agency NASA has rejected reality star Kim Kardashian's claim that the 1969 space mission to land the first human on the Moon was fake.
"Yes, we've been to the moon before... 6 times!" NASA Acting Administrator Sean Duffy wrote on social media.
Kardashian made the comments in the latest episode of her long-running TV series, The Kardashians, in which she told co-star Sarah Paulson that she thinks the moon landing "never happened."
Despite repeated debunking, conspiracy theories about whether humans actually landed on the moon have persisted for more than 50 years, especially with the rise of social media.
Kardashian says, "I'm sending you millions of articles about both Buzz Aldrin and the man." She then reads a quote allegedly given by Aldrin in response to a question about the mission's scariest moment.
She reads, "There wasn't a scary moment because it didn't happen. It could have been scary, but it wasn't because it didn't happen."
Kardashian appears to be referring to comments Aldrin made during a 2015 talk in the UK. During that talk, Aldrin doesn't say the mission didn't happen, but rather that there were no scary moments. However, he is then asked to recount an anecdote about a broken circuit breaker.
In her conversation with Paulson, Kardashian is later seen telling a producer that she believes the moon landing was faked.
"I think it was fake. I've seen some videos of Buzz Aldrin saying it didn't happen," she says. "He says that all the time in interviews now. Maybe we should find Buzz Aldrin."
Aldrin has not yet commented on Kardashian's remarks.
Fact-checkers, including Reuters news agency, have previously debunked conspiracy theories that misinterpret Aldrin's comments to suggest the landing didn't happen.
Following Kardashian's broadcast, Duffy tagged the reality star in a post on Instagram, refuting her comments, and promoting NASA's current lunar exploration program, Artemis, which is "resuming under the leadership" of Donald Trump.
He added, "We won the last space race, and we'll win this one too."
In response, Kardashian wrote back, asking about an interstellar object called 3I/Atlas, which astronomers say may be the oldest comet ever seen.
"Wait... what's so special about 3I/Atlas?!?!!!!!!!?????" she replied.
Duffy later invited Kardashian to the Kennedy Space Center for the launch of the Artemis missions to the Moon.
For decades, scientists and experts have refuted conspiracy theories claiming the Apollo 11 mission was a hoax.
According to the Institute of Physics, "Every argument claiming NASA faked the Moon landing has been debunked."
