Darren Silcox, from Pontnewydd, Cwmbran, was on holiday with his family at the Galeon Playa Apartments in the Costa Teguise resort last month.

The opening of his inquest heard that Mr Silcox fell down an atrium stairwell in the early hours of October 25 "after a wooden railing gave way".

The court was told that Spanish Civil Guard officers and paramedics attended the scene, but he was pronounced dead at 3:30 am BST.

Gwent Coroner's Court was told that the local Civil Guard is investigating his death.

Gwent Area Coroner, Rose Farmer, said she was opening an inquest "due to the cause of death being injuries sustained from a fall".

She said initial investigations suggested Mr Silcox died from "severe head injuries, a fractured skull and lacerations to the scalp sustained in a fall".

The inquest was adjourned until a full hearing on July 20, 2026.
Torfaen County Councillor David Daniels said Mr Silcox was a "lovely man".

"Darren and his wife [Kim] were at the heart of the community and had run the [Premier] shops for many decades.

"Anyone who grew up in the area would know those shops and we used to go there every day after school. He was very kind and very generous to us."

He added that Kim Silcox had died last year.

"It's incredibly sad that Darren Silcox has died a year after Kim passed away, and our thoughts are with their children, Connor and Ellie."
