WASHINGTON — California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who had served in Congress since 2013, has died, GOP leaders announced Tuesday. He was 65.
“Doug was a beloved father and husband, and a fierce advocate for his constituents and rural America,” Majority Whip Tom Emmer said in a post on X. “Our prayers are with Doug’s wife Jill and their children.”
Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan, who chairs the House Republican Conference, said LaMalfa “cared deeply for his constituents and worked tirelessly to represent their voices, values, and livelihoods in Congress.”
In remarks to House Republicans in Washington on Tuesday, President Trump remembered LaMalfa as a “wonderful man” and a “great, great member.” The president said LaMalfa died Monday and that he was “truly saddened by his passing.”

“He was a champion for everyone, and our condolences go out to his wife Jill and his entire family,” Mr. Trump said. “He was our friend. All of ours, every single one of us.”
LaMalfa represented California’s 1st Congressional District in the northeastern part of the state. He served as chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus.
The California Republican, a fourth-generation rice farmer and businessman, was a leading voice on agricultural and rural issues in Congress. He previously served in the California State Assembly and State Senate.
LaMalfa’s death further narrows the already slim GOP majority in the House. With his passing and the resignation of Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the party breakdown in the House is now 218 Republicans and 213 Democrats, with four vacancies. LaMalfa's district is one of five GOP-controlled districts in California that were redrawn under California's Proposition 50, a measure intended to make them more favorable to Democrats in the midterm elections.
North Carolina Republican Representative Richard Hudson said in a statement that LaMalfa was a "principled conservative and a tireless advocate for the people of Northern California."
"He was never afraid to fight for rural communities, farmers, and working families," Hudson said. "Doug demonstrated courage, authenticity, and conviction in everything he did in public service." New York Republican Representative Mike Lawler called LaMalfa "a great colleague and friend" who "represented California well for over a decade."
