Donald Trump demanded Late Night host Seth Meyers be fired – and this time, the FCC chairman echoed the president's demand
Trump has demanded that NBC fire late-night host Seth Meyers, accusing him of suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and blaming him for declining ratings.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, reinforcing Trump's demand, reiterated previous warnings about late-night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel.
On a previous show, Meyers addressed Trump's insults and emphasized that he would not engage in rants, but felt it necessary to respond to some claims.
After a weekend in which he lashed out at critics, Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Seth Meyers, as he has done before, and demanded the NBC late-night host be fired.
Trump posted on Truthout Social on Saturday, "NBC's Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). Last night he was seen in an uncontrollable rage, probably because his 'show' is a ratings disaster. On top of everything else, Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him immediately!"
Shortly after Trump's post on Saturday, Trump's FCC chairman, Brendan Carr, reposted the president's angry message on his X account.
Carr did not comment on Trump's post, but in furtherance of the president's call to remove a late night critic from NBC, the FCC chairman warned ABC stations in September about Jimmy Kimmel, whose comments about Charlie Kirk led the network to remove "Late Night House" from its schedule for several days. Two major station groups, Nexstar and Sinclair, said they would not air the show. Nexstar is seeking FCC approval to acquire Tegna.
An NBC spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Meyers has not yet responded.
Trump targeted Meyers earlier this month, calling him "the least talented person to ever perform live in the history of television" and "completely insane."
"Generally, I try to follow the New Yorker principle: When someone is blabbering about you, ignore it. Chances are they'll just move on and blabber about something else. But there's one thing I have to answer," Meyers said on the show. "You can say I'm talentless. You can say I'm insane. But I'm not the kind of person who talks endlessly about catapults on aircraft carriers!"
Carr's warning about Kimmel, after which he was taken off the air, sparked a backlash and Disney+ subscribers canceled their subscriptions.
A few days later, Carr claimed he wasn't threatening to revoke the stations' licenses if Kimmel wasn't fired. But some Republicans took it that way, with Senator Ted Cruz (Republican-Texas) comparing the FCC chairman's comments to the words of a mafia boss.
On his late-night show earlier this month, Kimmel said in his monologue, "We had some new lows over the weekend when the MAGA gang was trying their best to portray this guy who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of their own and doing everything they could to make political gains out of it."
Two days later, on Benny Johnson's podcast, Carr called Kimmel's comments "the worst behavior."
"Frankly, when you look at things like this, I mean, we can do it the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change their behavior, take action against Kimmel, or else the FCC will have more work to do."
In an interview with Benny Johnson, Carr did mention the possibility of Kimmel being fired and the station's license being revoked.
He said: "Look, there are calls for Kimmel to be fired. You can certainly see a suspension in this case. Again, the FCC will have some measures we can consider. Ultimately, we may be called upon to make a decision on this."
Cruz has stated that he plans to introduce the Justice Against Weaponized Bureaucratic Outreach to Network Expression (JAWBONE) Act. At a hearing last month, Cruz said that in response to the Biden administration's efforts to pressure tech companies, the legislation would "provide Americans with a strong right to seek compensation when they are targeted by their own government."
