Eastwood Cleared of Charges Over Pro-Palestine Rally
The charge against SDLP MP Colum Eastwood for attending an illegal pro-Palestinian rally has been dropped after he accepted a formal reprimand.
The 42-year-old former SDLP leader was accused, along with others, of participating in an unannounced pro-Palestinian march in Londonderry on February 14, 2024.
Prosecutors formally withdrew the charge at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Wednesday after a defense lawyer stated that the MP had accepted a warning known as an "informed warning."
The lawyer stated that the warning was given and accepted on November 1.
This latest development means that the criminal case against Mr. Eastwood has now concluded without a criminal conviction, although the reprimand will remain on his record for one year.
Five other people accused of participating in the same pro-Palestinian march will face charges and will be tried at a date to be determined.
In Northern Ireland, organisers must give 28 days' notice to the Parades Commission (which decides on controversial parades) before holding a parade or procession.
