Classical baritone Jubilant Sykes, widely known for his celebrated performance in the Grammy-nominated 2009 recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, was found fatally stabbed inside his Santa Monica home Monday night.
Police responded after a third party called 911 to report an assault in progress. When officers arrived, they discovered the 71-year-old singer with what they described as “critical injuries consistent with a stabbing.” Sykes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inside the home, police located 31-year-old Micah Sykes, the victim’s son, and took him into custody without incident. Investigators recovered a suspected weapon, and Micah was booked on suspicion of homicide. His bail has been set at $2 million.
Authorities emphasized that this appears to be an isolated domestic incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney for possible charges.
Court documents reveal that Micah has a documented history of erratic behavior. In 2017, a Southern California woman obtained a restraining order against him, alleging he showed signs of “mental instability,” acted unpredictably, and had displayed violent tendencies toward his own family.
The court filing states that Micah once confronted the woman outside a church, claiming he was in love with her. When another man intervened, Micah allegedly asked whether he had “a sharp object in his back pocket.” He was later placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold following an attempted break-in at a residence.
Jubilant Sykes was a prominent figure in classical music. His work on Mass, conducted by Marin Alsop with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, earned widespread acclaim. Gramophone Magazine hailed him as “the best of all possible Celebrants.”
The music world is mourning the loss of Jubilant Sykes as the investigation continues. More updates are expected once prosecutors review the case.
