Graphic of the week What B.C. thinks of a new oil pipeline

A majority of Canadians are in favour of the construction of a pipeline from Alberta to the northern coast of British Columbia, though support in the province most affected by the project is a lot thinner, a new poll by the Angus Reid Institute says.

Sixty per cent of people across the country back the potential project, according to poll results released Thursday, just hours after Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed a memorandum of understanding that includes an agreement designed to clear the way for more of Alberta’s oil to make it to the coast and on to Asian markets via a one-million-barrel-per-day conduit.

Rumours of an impending deal between Carney and Smith circulated for a few weeks before the announcement, angering B.C.’s premier and Indigenous groups, who complained of not being consulted while Ottawa and Alberta negotiated.

B.C. Premier David Eby warned the proposed pipeline should not become an “energy vampire” and potentially draw financial resources away from other projects.

The poll found 53 per cent of people in B.C. support the pipeline while 37 per cent do not.
