After making landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday and Cuba early Wednesday, Hurricane Melissa is now moving northeast across the Atlantic Ocean.
As of 11 a.m. Eastern Time, Melissa remained a Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. It was located about 150 miles south of the central Bahamas and moving northeast at 14 mph.
As the storm continues northward, the National Hurricane Center is issuing warnings for dangerous winds and heavy rainfall in Cuba and the Bahamas.
The NHC stated in its latest advisory, "According to forecasts, the center of Melissa is expected to move off the coast of eastern Cuba this morning, across the southeastern or central Bahamas, and pass near or west of Bermuda late Thursday night." According to meteorologists, heavy rainfall in eastern Cuba will cause "life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flooding, accompanied by numerous landslides."
The NHC is warning that "storm surges of 4 to 7 feet are possible today in the normally dry southeastern Bahamas, and minor coastal flooding is possible in the Turks and Caicos Islands today."
Melissa has been blamed for at least 33 deaths in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. In Jamaica, at least three people were killed before Melissa reached the coast, and officials said Wednesday that a tree fell on an infant after the storm. At least three people were killed by the storm in Haiti over the weekend, and a fourth person died in the Dominican Republic.
At least 25 people have died in Haiti, according to the mayor of Petit-Goâve, who said the La Digue River burst its banks and flooded nearby homes.
