A spokesperson for Joint Base Andrews (JBA), located in Maryland near Washington, DC, stated that the building where the package was opened has been evacuated, and medical staff determined that the sickened individuals are in stable condition.

CNN, citing unidentified sources familiar with the investigation, reported that the package contained an unknown white powder.

The air base is home to the US President's aircraft and its support aircraft, and is where the President typically travels.

The JBA spokesperson said the building in which the package was opened and a connecting building were evacuated "as a precaution" and a cordon established around the area.

They added: "First responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and normal operations have resumed. An investigation is currently ongoing."

According to CNN, initial tests conducted by a hazmat team found no hazardous materials.

Investigators are also assessing political propaganda contained in the package, the report states.

It is unclear how severe the illness was among those who were nearby after opening the package.
