This Diwali, we were surprised by rain, as the universe decided that diyas and fireworks weren't enough; we needed water too. So naturally, I found myself behind the wheel of the TG Garage's newest addition, the Kia Carens Clavis, capable of carrying family, gifts, and enough luggage to warrant a relocation mission.
Over a five-day and approximately 450-kilometer journey, the Clavis quietly performed its duties. While visiting several relatives, I realized that this Korean MPV was neither dramatic nor showy, just as reliable as the carefree, middle-child. Whether it was early morning errands, midnight fun rides, or navigating chaotic streets filled with firecrackers, it took it all in its stride.
Step inside, the cabin creates a tranquil environment away from all the outside noise. The layout is clean, spacious, and every control is easily accessible. Three usable rows mean there's no debate about family seating, and the ventilated front seats are a boon when your son wants to admire the sun through the panoramic sunroof. Materials feel sensible, not luxurious, but certainly a step up from the previous model.
On the road, the 1.5-liter turbo-petrol and 7-speed DCT engine feel refined and alert. With 158 bhp and 253 Nm, it's surprisingly quick when you decide to make up for lost time waiting for a sudden explosion of fireworks on the road. The suspension setup also deserves praise; it remains composed even when the car is fully loaded with people, gifts, and a week's worth of sweets.
Actual mileage is around 12.5 km/l, which is fine for city traffic, but anyone expecting miracles will be disappointed. The only real complaint? Despite wireless charging, there's no wireless connectivity.
Apple CarPlay works fine, but that dangling wire makes it seem like convenience always comes with strings attached. But the real boon turned out to be the Smart Pure air purifier. Mumbai's AQI crossed 300, yet we were able to breathe easy and watch the fireworks light up the sky from the panoramic sunroof.
