A heavy dump of snow, about 10-20 centimetres, is forecast to fall across the region with higher amounts possible in some areas, Environment Canada says on its weather alerts website.
A strong Alberta clipper is to blame for the system, which has also prompted a freezing rain warning that runs mostly along the international border but also up into the Virden and Brandon regions. It stretches from Saskatchewan to Richer and La Broquerie in the southeast.
A few hours of freezing rain, at times heavy, are expected Wednesday morning and early in the afternoon before the precipitation becomes snow and blowing snow.
The forecast has prompted Rolling River School Division in the southwest to cancel classes for Wednesday.
The blizzard conditions are expected to begin Wednesday afternoon in the parklands region and in the evening over southwestern Manitoba, the Interlake and Red River Valley.
It is expect to end throughout Thursday with the northern edge easing first, followed by the south.
Meanwhile, the southeast side of the province is under a winter storm warning where as much as 20 cm of snow is likely along with winds up to 60 km/h.
The wind gusts aren't expected to be strong enough to reach blizzard status. The miserable conditions will begin Wednesday afternoon with freezing rain before it all shifts into snow.
The province's fourth weather warning covers the north, where bitter arctic air is bringing extreme cold to the region. Environment Canada's cold warning says wind chill values will approach –50.
