Heartbreaking News: Martin Short’s Daughter Dies at 42
Katherine Short, 42, daughter of actor and comedian Martin Short, died at her home in the Hollywood Hills on Monday.

A representative for the "Only Murders in the Building" star said in a statement, "It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short." "The Short family is deeply saddened by this loss and requests privacy at this time. Katherine was loved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought to the world."
Katherine was found dead around 6 p.m. Monday, which was the first outlet to report the news. A law enforcement source told the Los Angeles Times that Short, a social worker, likely died by suicide.

One of three adopted children of Short and his then-wife, Nancy Dolman, Katherine mostly avoided the limelight, although she occasionally attended events and walked red carpets with her father. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and gender-sexuality studies from New York University in 2006, and a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010, and began working in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker.
According to People, she worked part-time at a clinic providing community outreach, peer support, and psychotherapy, and also worked with a charity called Bring Change 2 Mind, which aims to "empower young people to build connected, empathetic, and supportive school communities where conversations about mental health are welcomed and stigma-free."

Her mother, Dolman, first met Short in 1972 when they worked together on a production of Godspell. They married in 1980, then adopted Katherine and her younger brothers, Henry and Oliver. Dolman died of ovarian cancer in 2010 at the age of 58. The years that followed were "difficult," as Short told the Guardian in 2012. "It's one of those things in life that we live in denial about, that it will ever happen to us or our loved ones, and when it does happen, you feel a little bit of joy and a little bit of sadness. It's no big surprise."
Short is currently on a two-person comedy tour with his old friend and Only Murders co-star Steve Martin. The next show is in Milwaukee on Friday.
