Authorities say a high school teacher in Georgia was accidentally struck and killed by a car outside his home after his students attempted a toilet paper prank that went horribly wrong.

Jason Hughes, 40, left his home to surprise his students, who were throwing toilet paper at trees as a practical joke.

But Hughes slipped and fell on the ground, which was wet from rain. As the students tried to flee the scene in two separate cars, police said the driver of one of the cars accidentally struck him.

The student driving the car has been charged with homicide, but the teacher's family says they want the charges dropped.

Jason Hughes' wife, Laura Hughes, who is also an instructor at the same high school, said her husband was beloved by the students.

She said she knew about the prank and was "excited and waiting to catch them red-handed."

The Sheriff's Office said the student driver, identified as 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace, and two other people stopped to help Hughes before emergency responders arrived and took him to the hospital.

Wallace and four other 18-year-olds involved were also charged with criminal trespass and littering on private property.

Hughes' wife told the New York Times that the family "fully supports the dropping of charges against all involved."

"This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent another tragedy from ruining the lives of these students," she said. "It would be contrary to Jason's lifelong dedication to investing in the lives of these children."
A spokesperson for the Hall County School District told local outlet WXIA that Hughes will be remembered as "a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by his students and colleagues."

Community members have erected a memorial in front of the school where Hughes coached and taught.
