Rece Davis supported a former head coach's return to the field, praising his character and saying he "deserves another chance."

Former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald's name may once again be discussed as one of college football's most notable free agents. The longtime Northwestern coach recently settled his wrongful dismissal lawsuit with the university and told ESPN's College GameDay podcast that he feels "completely exonerated." He further stated that his conversations about returning to the field have been "very well received."

On the same podcast, host Rece Davis shared a personal story about Fitzgerald, highlighting how respected he is in the game. The conversation gave the college football community a rare look at Fitzgerald, who has remained publicly silent since his dismissal in July 2023.

Rhys Davis praised Fitzgerald's character and called for his return.

Rhys Davis said he has always respected Pat Fitzgerald and recounted a story from years ago that illustrates Fitzgerald's character. After Northwestern players mocked Davis' athletic ability, Fitzgerald personally called to make sure Davis wasn't upset.

"That's the kind of person he is," Davis said. "He didn't have to make that decision, but he went through with it." Davis explained that the moment stuck with him and shaped his view of Fitzgerald not only as a coach, but also as a person.

Davis added, "I know from my own experience what kind of person I consider him to be. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I know every single thing that happened at Northwestern and who was responsible and who wasn't. But I think he deserves another chance, and I hope he gets it, and I think he'll do very well. I really do."

While several programs are considering head coaching options, Fitzgerald has emphasized his readiness to return, saying he's "well-rested" and ready to lead again.
