Stats NZ said that the number of tourists arriving from the Tasmanian islands reached 1.48 million in the year ending September, an increase of 1.33 million from the previous year.
Stats NZ said this was the second-highest number of Australian tourist arrivals since 2019, before the pandemic.
Stats NZ's international travel statistics spokesperson, Brian Downes, said, "The increase in tourist arrivals from Australia in September 2025 is driven by increased flights between Australia and New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand's marketing campaign targeting the Australian market from early 2025."
Overall, tourist arrivals this year totaled 3.43 million, an increase of 197,000 compared to last year.
Besides Australia, the largest increases came from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
New Zealanders again left the country in record numbers.
Stats New Zealand also released migration statistics, which show that annual net migration growth was 12,400 in the year ending September, compared to a net increase of 42,400 in the same period last year.
For New Zealand citizens, the net migration loss in September 2025 was 46,400, primarily due to a record departure of 72,700 New Zealanders to Australia.
Stats New Zealand said 26,300 New Zealand citizens arrived during this period.
Net migration growth for non-New Zealand citizens was 58,800, comprising 112,600 arrivals and 53,800 departures.
