Her family confirmed the news on Monday, announcing that the beloved novelist passed away peacefully after a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Kinsella’s official Instagram account, the family said:
“We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved Sophie — also known as Maddie and Mummy — passed away this morning. Her final days were filled with her true loves: family, music, belonging, Christmas, and happiness. We can’t imagine life without her sparkle and love of life.”
Kinsella, whose real name was Madeleine Wickham, revealed in April 2024 that she had been diagnosed in late 2022. She explained that she initially kept the diagnosis private to allow her children the space to process the news.
Sophie Kinsella rose to global fame with her 2000 novel The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic — published in the United States as Confessions of a Shopaholic. The comedic story of a financial journalist with a shopping addiction became a worldwide hit and sparked a long-running, 10-book series.
Beyond the Shopaholic franchise, Kinsella authored numerous other works of fiction and sold more than 45 million books worldwide, touching readers with her humor, warmth, and uplifting storytelling.
